Founder
Joseph "Joe" Hastings
Joseph “Joe” Hastings is the Founder of the San Miguel Fund. Born and raised in a ranching community in Nebraska, Joe learned early the values of hard work, responsibility, and looking out for one another—principles that would guide him throughout his life.
Joe served his country in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. His military service, along with many formative life experiences, shaped him into a deeply compassionate and service-oriented person. Joe earned his law degree from Creighton University and went on to build a career practicing law and working as a commercial real estate appraiser. His professional life took him to – among other places - Washington, DC and Hawaii before he ultimately settled in Colorado Springs, where he lived for more than 30 years.
While in Colorado Springs, Joe dedicated much of his time outside of work to serving others. He provided extensive pro bono legal support to military personnel and immigrants, volunteered with organizations such as Silver Key and Catholic Charities, and served as a trusted mentor to many. Though he has since retired and moved out of state, Joe often says that Colorado Springs will always be home—especially the southwest side of town, where Cheyenne Mountain remains, in his words, “the center of my universe.”
Through the San Miguel Fund, Joe seeks to continue a lifelong commitment to service. He remains passionate about supporting the underserved in Colorado Springs, recognizing that today’s economic and societal conditions make it increasingly difficult for low-income families to thrive. The fund reflects Joe’s enduring belief in dignity, compassion, and the importance of ensuring that everyone has access to the basic resources and education needed to build a better future.
